DETROIT, April 13 (UPI) -- Texas Rangers star outfielder Josh Hamilton was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, the day after he broke his arm in a game against Detroit.
The reigning American League MVP broke a bone in his right upper arm while trying to score with a head-first slide Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks.
Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels had characterized the injury Tuesday as a small fracture in the humerus bone that would likely keep Hamilton from swinging a bat for at least four weeks.
After getting hurt, Hamilton said he only headed home on the advice of third-base coach Dave Anderson.
"I was [thinking], 'I don't want to do this ... something is going to happen,'" the player said. "But, I listened to my coach. It was just a stupid play."
Hamilton was off to another solid season at the plate, batting .333 with seven runs batted in.
The Rangers recalled infielder Chris Davis from Class AAA Round Rock to fill Hamilton's roster spot. Davis hit .192 with one home run in 45 games for the Rangers last year after knocking 38 homers in his two previous years. He was hitting .429 with four homers and 11 runs batted in over five games for the Express.
