WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Roy Halladay survived a scary ninth inning while recording his 59th career complete game Wednesday, allowing the Philadelphia Phillies to nip Washington 3-2.
Halladay (2-0) had allowed just two hits in eight shutout innings before heading out in a bid to finish the task. He gave up a leadoff double to Rick Ankiel and a single to Jayson Werth, putting runners on first and third.
Laynce Nix delivered a one-out single that scored Ankiel and moved Werth around to third and Danny Espinosa's infield single brought home Werth. With the tying run on second, Halladay struck out both Matt Stairs and Ivan Rodriguez to end the game.
Halladay struck out nine and walked two. He also scored a run in the fifth when Ryan Howard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
John Lannan (1-1) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in six innings. The Nationals had won four out of five.
