Sweeting downs Nishikori for Houston win

HOUSTON, April 10 (UPI) -- American Ryan Sweeting claimed his first career victory Sunday, downing Japan's Kei Nishikori in the final of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship.

Sweeting, an unseeded wild card, defeated the sixth-seeded Nishikori 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in a two-hour contest.

Sweeting, 23, had lost his only other meeting with Nishikori coming into Sunday's championship. His win makes him the fifth first-time winner on the ATP World Tour this year.

Nishikori, meanwhile, fell in his second career final.
