Schwartzel emerges with Masters victory

AUGUSTA, Ga., April 10 (UPI) -- South African Charl Schwartzel finished strong Sunday, birdying his last four holes en route to a 6-under-par 66 and a victory in a wild Masters finale.

Schwartzel emerged with his first major championship after a contentious final round that saw eight players grab a share of the lead and was almost overshadowed by a stunning run from four-time Masters champ Tiger Woods.

Schwartzel found the cup from off the green twice Sunday, which helped him post a 14-under 274, two shots better than Australians Adam Scott (67) and Jason Day (68).

Woods charged back from seven shots down to make the turn in 31 and grab a share of the lead, but couldn't parlay it into a win. He ended up posting a 5-under 67, sharing fourth place at minus-10 with Geoff Ogilvy (67) and Luke Donald (69).

Former Masters winner Angel Cabrera (71) finished seventh at nine-under par.

Third-round leader Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, fell apart Sunday, stumbling to an 80 to finish tied for 15th at 4-under 284.
