NEW YORK, April 9 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees Saturday signed right-handed pitcher Carlos Silva to a minor-league contract after his stormy exit from the Chicago Cubs last month.
Silva voiced his displeasure in March when he was cut from the Cubs' major league roster during spring training and refused to report to the team's minor league camp, instead obtaining his unconditional release.
Silva compiled a 10-6 record with 4.22 ERA in 21 starts for the Cubs last season. He began fast with an 8-0 mark but missed nearly two months due to an abnormal heart rate that required a surgical procedure.
The 32-year-old was roughed up this spring, yielding 27 runs (21 earned) on 32 hits over 17 1/3 innings.
Silva sports a 70-70 career record with a 4.68 ERA in 316 games for Philadelphia, Minnesota, Seattle and the Cubs.
