OTTAWA, April 9 (UPI) -- The Ottawa Senators fired Coach Cory Clouston Saturday, shortly after the team wrapped up its regular season with a 3-1 loss to Boston.

Also dismissed were assistant coaches Greg Carvel and Brad Lauer, Ottawa General Manager Bryan Murray said.

Clouston, 41, failed to take the team into the playoffs for the second time in three years. They finished last in the Northeast Division with a 32-40-10 record after finishing second last season and fourth the year before.

Clouston compiled a 95-83-20 record as head coach after being promoted from the Senators' American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton, N.Y., on Feb. 2, 2009.

Notre Dame's Floyd to stay with team

SOUTH BEND, Ind., April 9 (UPI) -- Notre Dame receiver Michael Floyd will remain with the team but is still on indefinite suspension after an arrest, Coach Brian Kelly said Saturday.

Floyd, who hauled down 79 passes for 1,025 yards and 12 TDs for the Irish last season, faces a court appearance next month in connection with an alcohol-related March arrest.

He was suspended indefinitely by Kelly after the incident -- the third time the 21-year-old has been cited for an alcohol-related offense.

"Michael's suspended and that's indefinite," Kelly told reporters Saturday after a Fighting Irish spring practice session. "This is not about football ... Mike has so many things on his plate that he has to handle before he can even think about football -- academics and personally."

Floyd said in a statement to the Chicago Tribune he appreciated the opportunity to stay in school for his senior year.

"I'm grateful that I still have a chance to earn my degree and be a member of the football team," he said. "I know that I still need to meet requirements set by the university and Coach Kelly, and that I have a lot of work to do that and to prove that I've grown from the experience."

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 9 (UPI) -- Sebastian Vettel took the pole position Saturday for the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix by narrowly edging Lewis Hamilton in the qualifying runs.

Vettel, of Red Bull Racing, sped around the 3.4-mile course in Kuala Lumpur in 1 minute, 34.870 seconds, 1/10th of a second faster than McLaren's Hamilton.

Vettel said he was happy to get to the pole after what he said was not the most satisfying qualifying series.

"I was happy with the car, but we never really got into a rhythm," Vettel said. "It was very close in the end with the McLaren guys, so I'm happy to get the pole."

Vettel's teammate, Mark Webber, placed third in the qualifying followed by McLaren's Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso. Seven-time F1 champ Michael Schumaker from the Mercedes team will start 11th.

The race at Sepang International Circuit Sunday will include 24 cars.

Yankees sign Silva to minor-league deal

NEW YORK, April 9 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees Saturday signed right-handed pitcher Carlos Silva to a minor-league contract after his stormy exit from the Chicago Cubs last month.

Silva voiced his displeasure in March when he was cut from the Cubs' major league roster during spring training and refused to report to the team's minor league camp, instead obtaining his unconditional release.

Silva compiled a 10-6 record with 4.22 ERA in 21 starts for the Cubs last season. He began fast with an 8-0 mark but missed nearly two months due to an abnormal heart rate that required a surgical procedure.

The 32-year-old was roughed up this spring, yielding 27 runs (21 earned) on 32 hits over 17 1/3 innings.

Silva sports a 70-70 career record with a 4.68 ERA in 316 games for Philadelphia, Minnesota, Seattle and the Cubs.
