NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- Brett Gardner scored one run and knocked in what proved to be the game-winner Thursday in the New York Yankees' 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

The Yankees dropped Minnesota starter Francisco Liriano to 0-2 on the year with four runs on four hits and three walks in five innings. New York managed just one hit after Liriano left the game.

New York was down 2-1 in the fourth when Andruw Jones doubled in a run and Russell Martin got an RBI on a groundout. Gardner followed with a single to right that made the score 4-2.

Yankees starter A.J. Burnett (2-0) earned the win by giving up five hits and two runs in six innings. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

New York grabbed a lead in the third when Gardner walked and stole second. He took third on a groundout and scored on Nick Swisher's sacrifice fly.

The Twins answered with two fourth-inning runs on RBI doubles from Jim Thome and Jason Kubel.

Minnesota added a run in the seventh when Alexi Casilla was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a groundout.
