ST. LOUIS, April 3 (UPI) -- Jaime Garcia tossed a four-hit shutout Sunday and the St. Louis Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep with a 2-0 decision over San Diego.

Garcia (1-0) walked two and struck out nine in posting his second career whitewash. The left-hander is coming off a 13-8 record in his rookie season.

The Cards got run-scoring singles from Yadier Molina and Ryan Theriot while Skip Schumaker added a pair of hits and a run scored as St. Louis posted its first win on the young season.

Padres starter Dustin Moseley (0-1) took the tough-luck loss, yielding only one unearned run on four hits, walking one over seven innings of work.
