OAKLAND, Calif., April 2 (UPI) -- Felix Hernandez threw the first complete game in the majors this season Friday and Seattle benefited from five Oakland errors to down the Athletics 6-2.
The teams were the last two to get their season started and it was a messy contest for the A's, who allowed two unearned runs and could manage only a two-run homer by Josh Willingham in the first inning.
Seattle got the score tied in the sixth and Chone Figgins put the Mariners in front in that frame with a solo homer.
Oakland then collapsed in the field during the seventh with errors by first baseman Daric Barton and pitcher Brad Ziegler leading to a three-run inning.
Hernandez allowed five hits and struck out five. It was the 14th complete game of his career, which is entering its sixth season.
Reliever Craig Breslow, the third of six Oakland pitchers, took the loss.
