
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 1 (UPI) -- Jeremy Guthrie opened the season with eight scoreless innings Friday, carrying Baltimore to a 4-1 decision over Tampa Bay.
Guthrie walked one, struck out six and retired 13 straight batters in one stretch. The only Tampa Bay run came on a ninth-inning homer by Ben Zobrist off Jim Johnson.
Nick Markakis singled in the first Baltimore run in the third and the Orioles expanded their lead to 4-0 in the fifth, during which Brian Roberts had a two-run triple and Markakis had a sacrifice fly.
The loss went to David Price, the runner-up in last year's American League Cy Young Award balloting. Price gave up four runs on five hits and struck out seven over seven innings.
The Orioles are attempting to end a streak of 13 straight losing season. The dropped 96 games in 2010.
