PHILADELPHIA, March 30 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies announced Wednesday they had placed second baseman Chase Utley and closer Brad Lidge on the disabled list to start the season.

Philadelphia also released veteran second baseman Luis Castillo, giving the backup second-base job to Wilson Valdez.

Both Utley and Lidge were expected to open the campaign on the disabled list after both suffered throughout spring training with injuries.

Utley missed all of the spring workouts due to a knee injury and the team has not ruled out surgery. He appeared in 115 games last season with 16 homers and 65 RBI, his lowest totals in both categories since 2004.

Lidge is suffering from a rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss up to six weeks.
