NEWARK, N.J., March 30 (UPI) -- Andy Greene put New Jersey in front with 4:56 to play Wednesday and the Devils ended a team-record scoreless streak in downing the New York Islanders 3-2.

Ilya Kovalchuk's goal 4:17 into the contest halted a New Jersey stretch without a goal that began March 22 11:05 into a loss to Boston. The Devils did not score for the rest of that game and were then shut out twice in a row by Pittsburgh and Buffalo.

Jacob Josefson gave the Devils a 2-0 lead in the second period but Frans Nielsen produced two goals for the Islanders in the third to tie it.

Martin Brodeur made 27 saves to get the victory. It was just the second win for the Devils in seven games, a slump that wiped out their playoff hopes.

Rick DiPietro gave up three goals on 20 shots for New York, which has lost three in a row.
