Padres' Latos to start season on shelf

PEORIA, Ariz., March 29 (UPI) -- San Diego Padres starting pitcher Mat Latos will start the 2011 season on the disabled list, the National League club said Tuesday.

Latos, who has a strained right shoulder, is one of four Padres placed on the DL.

Latos was 14-10 with a 2.92 earned run average in 31 appearances in 2010.

Also on the DL retroactive to March 22 are pitcher Joe Thatcher (strained left shoulder), and infielders Kyle Blanks (Tommy John surgery) and Jarrett Hoffpauir (strained right quadriceps).

Utility player Mike Baxter and outfielder Eric Patterson went on the DL earlier.

San Diego, which went 90-72 last year, will take 12 pitchers, six infielders, five outfielders and two catchers with them for its season-opener Thursday in St. Louis.
