Nadal downed Japan's Kei Nishikori, 6-4, 6-4 in an evening match. Coming off a finals appearance at Indian Wells, Nadal will next play fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who advanced with a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4 upset over 26th seed Juan Ignacio Chela.

Also notching a second-round victory Saturday was Roger Federer, who coasted to a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Radek Stepanek. The Swiss superstar holds the third seed after back-to-back Miami championships in 2005-06.

Federer's 762nd career win ties him with Pete Sampras for seventh on the all-time list. He will next play 32nd-seed Argentine Juan Monaco, who bested Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 Saturday.

No. 13 seed Mikhail Youzhny and 15th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also collected wins Saturday, but 10th-seeded Jurgen Melzer went down in an upset by Philipp Petzschner.
