Clijsters coasts into third round in Miami

MIAMI, March 25 (UPI) -- No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters, playing her first match at the Sony Ericsson Open, coasted into the third round Friday with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Anastasiya Yakimova.

Clijsters, the defending champion, needed just 49 minutes to record the 499th victory of her professional career. She bounced back after having to retire from a fourth-round match at Indian Wells last week due to a shoulder injury.

In the third round, Clijsters will meet Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Anna Tatishvili. Clijsters and the other 31 seeds in the tournament received a bye past the first round.

Vera Zvonareva, the third seed, came from behind to oust Dinara Safina 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Defending French Open champion Francesca Schiavone moved on by downing Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-4 and Marion Bartoli, who lost in the Indian Wells finals to Caroline Wozniacki, defeated Ayumi Morita 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Other second-round winners included Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova, Virginie Razzano and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
