
MIAMI, March 24 (UPI) -- Radek Stepanek earned a meeting with second-seeded Roger Federer Thursday with a first-round win at the Sony Ericsson Open.
Stepanek defeated Fabio Fognini 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and will meet the 16-time major champion who has twice won this tournament.
The first round was concluded Thursday with all the seeded players having received a bye to the second round. Janko Tipsarevic was among the winners, getting past Robin Haase 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Rainer Schuettler took out Ryan Harrison 7-5, 6-2 after Harrison had won three matches at Indian Wells in the previous ATP Tour stop.
Pablo Cuevas outlasted Michael Berrer 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) and will face defending champion Andy Roddick.
Also advancing Thursday were Philipp Petzschner, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Andreas Seppi, Teymuraz Gabashvili and Carlos Berlocq.
