TEMPE, Ariz., March 22 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Angels first baseman Kendrys Morales has hit a roadblock in his comeback from a broken ankle and will shut down for now, the team said Tuesday.

Morales, experiencing soreness in his left foot after trying to run for consecutive days, will open the 2011 season on the 15-day disabled list, Angels General Manager Tony Reagins told MLB.com.

"We would prefer he's ready, like anybody," Reagins said of Morales, whose promising season ended last May when he fractured his left ankle during a home-run victory celebration at home plate.

Reagins told the Web site he didn't believe Morales would miss a significant amount of time.

"It has to do with the ball of his foot, not the ankle," Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said. "We're going to let it calm down and get back to baseball activities. We had some tests done. Hopefully, it's something very manageable."
