CLEARWATER, Fla., March 16 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Phillies part owner J. Mahlon "Jim" Buck Jr. has died, the team announced Wednesday.

Buck, who had been part of the team's ownership group along with his brothers Whip and Bill since 1981, died Tuesday night. The team provided no other details.

"His strength of character and steady leadership have been very important factors in the success of the Phillies today," Phillies President David Montgomery said. "Jim provided direction and consistent support for many of us in this organization. His wise counsel and warm friendship will be sorely missed."

Buck's survivors include his wife, Elia, two children and grandchildren.
