Detroit won its third in a row and increased its lead over Chicago to eight points at the top of the Central Division. Washington, which had won nine out of 11, missed a chance to move past Philadelphia into first place in the Eastern Conference.

Zetterberg opened the scoring 12:23 into the first period but John Carlson tied it 23 seconds later.

Valtteri Filppula tipped in a shot with 5:15 left in the first to again give the Red Wings the lead but Alex Ovechkin forged another tie with his 29th of the season, 5:53 into the second. Zetterberg reached 20 goals for the campaign, the seventh time in his nine NHL seasons he has achieved that mark.

Michal Neuvirth took the loss, allowing three goals on 33 shots. It was only his second setback in the last month.
