ALBUQUERQUE, March 16 (UPI) -- Kendall Williams and Drew Gordon scored 18 points apiece Tuesday to lead New Mexico past Texas-El Paso 69-57 in the opening round of the NIT.

Gordon was 8-of-13 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds in the win, which sent the Lobos (22-12) on to a second-round tilt against Alabama. Phillip McDonald scored 12 points for fourth-seeded New Mexico.

Randy Culpepper led the fifth-seeded Miners (25-10) with 23 points. Jeremy Williams and Gabriel McCulley both scored 10 points.

New Mexico led 34-30 at the half and went cold in the second half, hitting 9-of-26 shots for the field. They relied on a sharp 13-of-16 performance at the free-throw line and outrebounded UTEP 41-26.
