NEWARK, N.J., March 15 (UPI) -- Jacob Josefson's third-period goal put New Jersey ahead for good Tuesday and the Devils went on to post a 4-2 victory over Atlanta.

The win enabled the Devils to stay within striking distance of an Eastern Conference playoff spot, improving to 23-3-2 in their last 28 games overall while creeping to within six points of the final spot.

The Devils got goals from Travis Zajac, Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk, and Martin Brodeur stopped 18-of-20 shots.

Atlanta saw its playoff hopes dim, falling into 12th place in the East.

Tim Stapleton and Chris Thorburn scored and Ondrej Pavelec made 20 saves for the Thrashers.
