Arkansas fires basketball Coach Pelphrey

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., March 13 (UPI) -- The University of Arkansas has fired men's head basketball Coach John Pelphrey, school officials announced Sunday.

Pelphrey was coming off an 18-13 season with the Razorbacks.

The team stumbled down the stretch, however, losing its final three conference games before falling to Tennessee in the first round of this weekend's Southeastern Conference Tournament.

"After a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our men's basketball program, including an assessment of the overall student-athlete experience within our program, it is clear that we have not made the progress over the last four years that is necessary to return Razorback basketball to a place of national relevance," Arkansas Athletics Director Jeff Long said in a statement.

Pelphrey, who came to Arkansas via South Alabama in 2007, compiled a record of 69-59 in four years of guiding the Razorbacks.

His SEC record was 25-39.
