COL BKB: Brigham Young 87, New Mexico 76

LAS VEGAS, March 11 (UPI) -- Jimmer Fredette broke his own school record by scoring 52 points Friday and No. 8 BYU needed his heroics to fight off New Mexico 87-76.

The Cougars moved into the championship game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament and continued to bounce back from the loss of Brandon Davies.

Davies was suspended for the remainder of the season this month for breaking the BYU honor code and the Cougars promptly lost to New Mexico for only their third setback of the season.

Fredette more than made up for Davies' absence, hitting 22-of-37 shots from the field. He was 7-of-14 from 3-point range and became BYU's all-time leading scorer with 2,471 points.

That broke the mark of 2,467 set by Danny Ainge from 1977-81.

Jackson Emery added 14 points for BYU (30-3).

New Mexico (21-12) got 17 points and 15 rebounds from Drew Gordon.
