INDIANAPOLIS, March 11 (UPI) -- A 30-point effort from Kalin Lucas and a strong defensive showing Friday lifted Michigan State to a 74-56 win over No. 9 Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament.
The surprisingly easy victory put the Spartans in the semifinals, where they will meet either Wisconsin or Penn State Saturday.
After a disappointing regular season, the Spartans (19-13) need a quality effort in this event to guarantee an appearance in the NCAA Tournament and they added their win over Purdue to a first-round triumph over Iowa.
Lucas made 10-of-11 from the foul line. Keith Appling was the only other Michigan State player in double figures with 10 points.
Purdue (25-7) was led by 21 points from JaJuan Johnson. The Boilermakers hope to earn as high as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tourney.
Purdue finished second in the regular-season standings behind Ohio State, which had to go to overtime earlier in the day to win its quarterfinal meeting with Northwestern.
Michigan State held Purdue to 19 field goals for the game. The Boilermakers hit just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc.
