CHICAGO, March 6 (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Matt Thornton has agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract extension, the team said Sunday.

The 34-year-old left-hander's deal includes a $6 million club option for a third year and will pay $5.5 million per season in 2012 and 2013, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Thornton, who made the American League All-Star team last season, is being eyed for the White Sox closer's slot although manager Ozzie Guillen has said he's leaning toward not having any assigned bullpen roles.

Over 410 career games with the Seattle Mariners and Chicago, Thornton has compiled a 26-23 record with a 3.68 earned run average and 436 strikeouts.

He posted a 5-4 record with a 2.67 ERA last season.
