KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia, March 5 (UPI) -- Carlo Janka of Switzerland won the men's World Cup giant slalom in Slovenia Saturday just two weeks after undergoing minor heart surgery.
Janka topped Alexis Pinturault of France and Ted Ligety of the United States with a combined-run time of 2 minutes, 27.05 seconds.
The 19-year-old Pinturault turned in a second-run time of 1:12.90 to jump into second place and just missed equaling Janka's total time by 2/100ths of a second.
Janka's victory at Kranjska Gora came 10 days after undergoing a radio frequency catheter intervention procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.
The third-place finish extended Ligety's season lead in the giant slalom standings to 77 points over Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway. Svindal placed 22nd Saturday.
"Kranjska Gora is really technical the whole way," Ligety said. "It is really steep out of the start and really steep at the bottom and the middle rolls pretty much the whole way -- it never gives you a break."
