GREEN BAY, Wis., March 4 (UPI) -- The Green Bay Packers Friday signed Coach Mike McCarthy to a five-year contract extension informally agreed to shortly after the Packers won the Super Bowl.

McCarthy, in his fifth season, led the Packers to the Super Bowl crown as the sixth and last seed in the National Football Conference. The Packers defeated Philadelphia, Atlanta and Chicago -- all on the road -- to get to the title game before knocking off Pittsburgh 31-25.

He joined Vince Lombardi and Mike Holmgren as coaches who have won a Super Bowl for Green Bay.

"We are very pleased to finalize this agreement with Mike," Ted Thompson, executive vice president, general manager and director of football operations for Green Bay, said. "He's a good football coach, a good leader, and a good man. I look forward to working with Mike into the future."

McCarthy, 47, has a 48-32 regular-season record with the Packers. He was offensive coordinator for one season in San Francisco before becoming Green Bay's head coach.
