VIENNA, March 4 (UPI) -- Gilles Simon and Jeremy Chardy each won in straight sets Friday, giving France a 2-0 lead in its best-of-five Davis Cup series against Austria.
The wins put France, which was the Davis Cup runner-up last year, one match win from advancing to July's quarterfinals. The Austria-France winner will take on the winner of a series between Croatia and Germany.
Chardy opened Friday's play with a 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 win over Jurgen Melzer before Simon put the French up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 romp over Stefan Koubek in just 98 minutes.
Simon didn't face a break point and finished off six of the 12 break chances he had against Koubek. Simon piled up 41 winners against 26 unforced errors while Koubek was credited with 11 winners and 41 unforced errors.
Melzer had three service breaks versus Chardy but the French player always had an answer and finished with six breaks -- two in each set.
France will send out the doubles team of Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra against Melzer and Oliver Marach on Saturday. Austria must win that match and Sunday's reverse singles, in which Melzer takes on Simon and Koubek plays Chardy, to advance.
