RALEIGH, N.C., March 3 (UPI) -- Jamie McBain scored on a slap shot from the right point 26 seconds into overtime Thursday, bringing the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over Buffalo.

The Hurricanes won their second straight and jumped past the New York Rangers into seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Carolina leads ninth-place Buffalo by three points, although the Sabres have two games in hand.

All the regulation scoring came during a span of 7:23 of the second period. Steve Montador and Brad Boyes gave Buffalo a pair of one-goal leads only to have Jiri Tlusty and Chad LaRose score equalizers for the Hurricanes.

Cam Ward made 27 saves in his 24th consecutive start.

Ryan Miller gave up three goals on 24 shots for the Sabres.
