ANAHEIM, Calif., March 3 (UPI) -- Bobby Ryan scored on a rare overtime penalty shot Wednesday to give the Anaheim Ducks a 2-1 victory over Detroit.
Ruslan Salei was called for hooking on a breakaway with 2:50 having expired in the extra period and that sent Ryan in on goaltender Jimmy Howard with a chance to end it.
Ryan came through to bring Anaheim a crucial two points in the tight Western Conference playoff battle. The Ducks are tied with Nashville for ninth place, one point behind Dallas and Los Angeles and two points behind Calgary.
The regulation goals came from Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk in the second period and Anaheim's Jason Blake in the third.
Detroit, which leads Chicago by 11 points at the top of the Central Division, had won two in a row.
Dan Ellis made 30 saves to get the win. Howard stopped 26 shots.
