LOS ANGELES, March 2 (UPI) -- U.S. tennis star Serena Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism last week, her spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Nicole Chabot told People magazine Williams had emergency treatment Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Williams, 29, had been seen at the hospital several times over the past week.

Chabot said the blood clot in the lungs was found when Williams returned to Los Angeles from New York, where she was seeing a doctor for "ongoing issues with her foot."

"Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications," she added.

Williams attended the Elton John AIDS Foundation's Oscar party Sunday.
