Former Cowboy faces mortgage fraud charges

MIAMI, March 2 (UPI) -- A former Dallas Cowboys player is facing federal charges in connection with an alleged $2.5 million mortgage fraud in Florida, authorities say.

Former NFL player Godfrey Myles, 42, of Miami and two other men, Patrick Brinson, 34, of Miami and Parkland, Fla., real estate broker David Lam, 42, were charged in an 11-count indictment with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, wire fraud and making false statements on loan applications to a mortgage lender, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Some of the charges carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison.

Myles and the two other defendants allegedly used fictitious buyers to obtain $2.55 million in loans on two properties by submitting inflated home prices to the lender, an indictment says.

"More than $488,000 in fraudulent loan proceeds were laundered by Brinson and Myles and others through multiple accounts and were ultimately used for the benefit of the defendants and others," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.

Miami-born Miles was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1991 and played until 1996, with the Cowboys winning three Super Bowls during his time with the team.
