WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Veteran linebacker/defensive end Andre Carter was released by the Washington Redskins Tuesday, the team announced.
The 10-year pro became an unrestricted free agent after Washington declined to pick up a $4.1 million bonus owed to him in the offseason, thus voiding the rest of his contract, The Washington Post reported.
Carter struggled this past season after Coach Mike Shanahan installed a 3-4 defense, necessitating a switch from end to linebacker.
As a result, his production fell off from the 11 sacks he recorded in 2009, and he was inconsistent in pass coverage, the newspaper noted.
The move marked the third release of a Washington player this week.
Running back Clinton Portis also was cut and left guard Derrick Dockery was released earlier Tuesday.
