WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin's end-to-end rush and goal 1:55 into overtime Tuesday boosted the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders.

Ovechkin picked up the puck in his own zone and steamed all the way the down the ice, maneuvering for a backhander from the right side of the net that eluded Nathan Lawson.

Brooks Laich forced the overtime when he scored on a pass from newly acquired Jason Arnott with 48 seconds remaining to forge a 1-1 tie.

Michal Neuvirth stopped 28-of-29 shots for Washington, which broke a three-game home losing streak.

Matt Moulson scored and Lawson ended with 40 saves for the Islanders.
