MOSCOW, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- A Russian committee said Sunday voters chose the polar bear, leopard and hare to be the mascots for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Sunday's announcement was based on around 1.4 million phone calls and text messages from across Russia.

The RIA Novosti news agency said the three animals represented about 68 percent of the total vote with the leopard leading the pack followed in order by the polar bear and the hare.

A total of 13 creatures and symbols were proposed by the Russia public in a competition that began in September. About 24,000 sketches of potential mascots were submitted.
