Commissioner Bud Selig made the announcement at the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Spring Training Complex in Scottsdale, Ariz. -- the new, $120 million spring training home of both the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Torre will take over the job duties formerly handled by Jimmie Lee Solomon, who is now MLB's executive vice president for baseball development, MLB.com reported.

John McHale held the job on an interim basis, while Frank Robinson oversaw the umpires, security and on-field baseball operations, the Web site said.

"I could not be more excited to work with all the clubs to help protect the integrity of the game and, hopefully, make it an even more enjoyable experience for our fans," Torre said in a statement.

Torre, 70, won four World Series titles and two Manager of the Year Awards in 29 years behind the bench following a stellar playing career. He retired as manager of the Dodgers after last season.

Dulko downs Parra Santonja for Mexico win

ACAPULCO, Mexico, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Gisela Dulko started quickly and then hung on to down Arantxa Parra Santonja Saturday and win the Mexican Open.

Dulko raced out to 4-1 lead in the first set but then had to battle a determined Parra Santonja comeback try, eventually emerging with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory and claiming her fourth career title.

Argentina's Dulko posted leads of 3-0 and 6-3 in the decisive second-set tiebreaker, but Spain's Parra Santonja wouldn't go easily, fighting off two match points before yielding in a match that lasted almost 2 hours.

Dulko, probably best known for her doubles play after winning the 2011 Australian Open crown with Flavia Pennetta, took her first singles title since 2008 in Fes, Morocco.

Sixth-seeded Parra Santonja was trying for her first career singles title.

ARE, Sweden, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- American Lindsey Vonn scored a big win in her World Cup campaign Saturday with a victory in the women's downhill at Are, Sweden.

Vonn won by a comfortable margin over Tina Maze of Slovenia and gained 40 points on the Germany's Maria Reisch, who finished third Saturday, in the overall World Cup standings.

"We have a super G tomorrow and I'm hoping to gain some more ground back on Maria, but there's still a lot of races left in this season and Maria is skiing incredibly well," said Vonn, who also scored her first win since suffering a concussion three weeks ago.

"Today was tough," Vonn added. "it was pretty dark and you had to be extremely clean to be fast -- that's a difficult combination."
