Lindsey Vonn wins women's downhill in Are

ARE, Sweden, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- American Lindsey Vonn scored a big win in her World Cup campaign Saturday with a victory in the women's downhill at Are, Sweden.

Vonn won by a comfortable margin over Tina Maze of Slovenia and gained 40 points on the Germany's Maria Reisch, who finished third Saturday, in the overall World Cup standings.

"We have a super G tomorrow and I'm hoping to gain some more ground back on Maria, but there's still a lot of races left in this season and Maria is skiing incredibly well," said Vonn, who also scored her first win since suffering a concussion three weeks ago.

"Today was tough," Vonn added. "it was pretty dark and you had to be extremely clean to be fast -- that's a difficult combination."

Vonn finished in 1 minute, 40.93 seconds, 13/100ths of a second ahead of Maze. Dominique Gisin of Switzerland took fourth and Stacey Cook of the United States placed fifth with a 1:41.99.
