
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Defenseman Andrej Meszaros scored with 18 seconds remaining in overtime Thursday to give Philadelphia a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders.
The Flyers let a two-goal lead slip away in the third period before becoming the first team in the NHL this season to reach 40 wins.
Meszaros has scored five goals and two of them have come in an overtime period.
Philadelphia took a 3-1 lead when Jeff Carter scored on a tip-in 5:05 into the third period, but Matt Martin then produced two goals for the Islanders. His second score came with just 28 seconds left in regulation.
Philadelphia has picked up at least a point in eight of its last 10 games (7-2-1) and improved its Eastern Conference-leading point total to 86.
Sergei Bobrovsky earned the victory with 32 saves. Al Montoya gave up four goals on 43 shots for the Islanders, who have lost two in a row.
