Marino earns first semifinal berth

MEMPHIS, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Rebecca Marino became the only seeded player to reach the semifinals Thursday at the Cellular South Cup in Memphis.

Marino, seeded sixth, defeated Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 7-6 (8-6). This is the sixth tournament on the women's tour in Marino's career, and she will be taking part in her first semifinal match.

Her opponent in the semifinals will be Evgeniya Rodina, who defeated qualifier Heather Watson 6-3, 6-4.

The other semifinal will send Lucie Hradecka against Magdalena Rybarikova. Hradecka was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Ksenia Pervak and Rybarikova won over Alexa Glatch 6-2, 6-3.

The tournament's No. 1 seed, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, was knocked out in the first round.
