MEMPHIS, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Top seeds Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Sofia Arvidsson took unexpectedly quick exits Monday in first-round action of the Cellular South Cup.
Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic, who held the tourney's No. 1 seed, tumbled at the hands of Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek in a one-sided 6-1, 6-3 defeat.
Krajicek, the half-sister of former men's Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, had little trouble against Zahlavova Strycova on the indoor surface at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
Meanwhile, No. 2 seed and former Memphis champion Arvidsson of Sweden was whipped by American Alexandra Stevenson 6-3, 6-1 in another upset.
Stevenson, the 31-year-old daughter of former NBA great Julius Erving, won Memphis in 2002. Arvidsson was the runner-up at last year's event and won it in 2006.
Also going down in surprise Monday was fifth-seeded Olga Govortsova of Belarus, who lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to French qualifier Stephanie Foretz Gacon.
