Quiros rides eagles to win in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Alvaro Quiros had a pair of eagles -- one a hole-in-one -- Sunday in winning the European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic.

It was the fifth European Tour victory for Quiros who shot a 4-under-par 68 Sunday and finished at 11-under 277. His final round included a triple bogey, bogey, four birdies and the two eagles.

James Kingston, who shot 67 Sunday, tied Anders Hanson (70) for second at 10-under. Rory McIlroy, who led after each round until Sunday, faded with a 2-over 74, which including three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 14-16. He ended up tied for 10th after shooting 5-over the final two rounds.

Tiger Woods posted a double-bogey 7 on the final hole and shot 3-over 75 and wound up tied for 20th, seven strokes behind Quiros.

Quiros opened the day one stroke behind McIlroy, Hanson and Thomas Aiken, who shot even-par 72 Sunday, but grabbed the lead with an eagle at the par-4, 351-yard second hole and a birdie at No. 3. He played those two holes at 9-under for the week.

His lead was three strokes after a birdie at the fifth hole but his drive stuck in a palm tree at No. 8 and he ended up with a 7 on the par-4 hole. He answered with a birdie at No. 9. He then aced the par-3, 161-yard 11th hole and erased a 14th-hole bogey with a birdie at 16.
