Kudryavtseva, King fall in Memphis upsets

MEMPHIS, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Seeded players Alla Kudryavtseva and Vania King were early upset victims Sunday in first-round play of the Cellular South Cup tennis event.

The fourth-seeded Kudryavtseva of Russia fell in straight sets to Sandra Zahlavova, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, indoors at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-born No. 8 seed King was upended in three sets by Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9).

No. 7 Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic was an easy winner, however, over Christina McHale of the United States, 6-2, 6-1, while Alexa Glatch, Heather Watson and Coco Vandeweghe also notched straight-set wins on opening day.
