Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 11 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Fernando Verdasco survived a difficult battle with Ivo Karlovic Thursday before earning a spot in the quarterfinals of the SAP Open.
Verdasco defeated Karlovic 7-5, 7-5 to set up a meeting with Denis Istomin in the next round.
Istomin outlasted Michael Russell 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4), giving him two victories in a tournament for the first time in four events this year. He made it to the semifinals just three times in 2010.
Another quarterfinal matchup was determined when Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Lukas Lacko 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) and Lleyton Hewitt survived against Brian Dabul 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Del Potro and Hewitt will face each other with a semifinal berth on the line.
