Austria's Fenninger wins super-combined

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Austria's Anna Fenninger captured the gold medal in the women's super-combined on a soft track at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Germany.

The 21-year-old racer turned in a solid slalom time of 53.36 seconds for a combined-run total of 2 minutes, 43.23 seconds, a scant 9/100ths of a second faster than Tina Maze of Slovenia.

Sweden's Anja Paerson took the bronze, with Dominique Gisin of Switzerland and Austrian Elisabeth Goergl in fourth and fifth.

The competition consisted of downhill and slalom runs resulting in a combined total time.

American Julia Mancuso, who won the super-G gold earlier this week, placed seventh with a 2:44.56. She said the soft snow definitely was a factor in the results.

"I definitely needed to charge harder in the slalom and was a little conservative," Mancuso said. "I think I was a little nervous at the start because the course set was really turny."

U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn did not take part in the slalom competition after a disappointing 12th in the downhill portion. Vonn has been shaking off the effects of a concussion and said she might skip Saturday's final downhill training run.
