Bruins' Savard to miss rest of season

BOSTON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard will miss the rest of the season because of a concussion suffered last month, the NHL team said Monday.

Savard, 33, was injured Jan. 22 when Colorado defenseman Matt Hunwick knocked him into the boards and hasn't played since.

It was announced at a news conference that Savard was being placed on long-term injured reserve, which means he will miss the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.

He had two goals and eight assists over 25 games this season.

It was the second concussion Savard suffered in 10 months. He was taken from the ice on a stretcher after a hit by Pittsburgh's Matt Cook on March 7, 2010. He missed the rest of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs.

He also sat out the first 23 games of this season because of post-concussion symptoms.

For his 13-season NHL career, Savard has 207 goals and 499 assists in 807 games. He's played for the New York Rangers, Calgary and Atlanta in addition to Boston.
