Jeff Fisher: 'Time to move on'

NASHVILLE, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Jeff Fisher said Friday his departure from the Tennessee Titans was simply a matter of it being the right time to move on.

The franchise announced Thursday that Fisher was ending his 17-year tenure as coach of the team.

He acknowledged that differences had arisen since Titans owner Bud Adams had announced this month that Fisher would stay on to coach in 2011, but the coach declined to specify.

"There were some differences, but beyond that it's just a situation we just got into," Fisher said at a news conference. "I was moving into the last year of a contract and it's just best for everybody.

"I'm not going to go into the specifics. They've been worked out and they've been dealt with. It's time to move on."

Fisher became coach of the franchise when it was still located in Houston. He coached the Titans to one Super Bowl appearance and eventually became the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL.

"This is a very, very tough day for this franchise," Adams said. "Jeff meant a great deal to this team and I appreciate all he has done for us. He helped us create great moments for our fans.

"Unfortunately, organizations and coaches almost always reach a point where it's time for a change. I think both the team and Jeff will benefit from this move."

Fisher posted a 142-120 record with the Titans, who made six post-season appearances and won four division titles under his guidance. They went 6-10 in 2010 and quarterback Vince Young was dismissed from the team following the season.

"I've been coaching for 25 years and I think I'm tired," Fisher said. "I need some rest."
