Edfors shoots 64 in Bahrain first round

MANAMA, Bahrain, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Johan Edfors turned in an 8-under-par 64 Thursday and owns the lead after the first round of the European Tour's Volvo Golf Champions event in Bahrain.

Edfors had nine birdies and one bogey at the Royal Golf Club and is two strokes up on four players tied for second while another eight finished the first round at 5-under 67.

Those tied for second are Peter Hanson and Graeme Storm, who were each bogey free Thursday, and Pablo Larrazabal and Francesco Molinari, who each had seven birdies and one bogey in the first round.

Edfors opened his round with a birdie at the 10th hole and got to 3-under with back-to-back birdied at 14 and 15. His long bogey came at the 16th hole but answered with another birdie at No. 17.

He had five birdies on the front side, closing with birdies at Nos. 8 and 9.
