RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Cam Ward held New York scoreless until late in the third period Thursday and made 39 saves in boosting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-1 over the Rangers.

The Hurricanes halted a two-game skid, scoring the game's first three goals and getting a solid effort from the struggling Ward. He won for just the fourth time in nine games.

Chad LaRose and Jussi Jokinen scored in the opening period and Brandon Sutter gave Carolina a 3-0 advantage heading into the final stanza.

Brandon Prust broke up Ward's shutout bid with 8:20 to play.

Henrik Lundqvist gave up the four Carolina goals on 39 shots.

It was the fourth loss in six games for the Rangers, who could not back up their 7-0 win over Toronto Wednesday.
