FLUSHING, N.Y., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Veteran right-handed pitcher Chris Young was signed to a one-year contract Thursday by the New York Mets, the team said.

Terms were not disclosed.

Young made only four starts with the Padres in 2010 while struggling with right shoulder problems, finishing with a record of 2-0 and an ERA of 0.90.

San Diego decided not to pick up Young's $8.5 million option for the 2011 campaign.

Young, 31, has missed parts of the past three seasons because of arm problems. The Princeton product has a 48-34 career record, with a 3.80 ERA in 135 starts with Texas and San Diego over seven seasons.

In other Mets news, the club came to terms with outfielder Scott Hairston, 30, on a one-year contract. Details also were not released.

Hairston appeared in 104 games for San Diego last season, batting .210 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.

Over seven seasons, Hairston batted a career .245 with 68 homers and 198 RBI over 564 games with Arizona, Oakland and the Padres.
