NHL: Pittsburgh 4, Detroit 1

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Chris Conner scored on a first-period penalty shot Tuesday and the Pittsburgh Penguins went on to defeat Detroit 4-1.

Jordan Staal, Chris Kunitz and Matt Cooke also scored for Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 36-of-37 shots as the Penguins won their third consecutive game, despite playing their sixth straight contest without captain Sidney Crosby, who is sidelined with a concussion.

The victory enabled Pittsburgh to remain three points behind Philadelphia atop the Eastern Conference.

The Red Wings, losers of three in four, got their only goal from Johan Franzen and Joey MacDonald made 25 saves.
